Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome

Bulldog

Brachycephalic breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Boxers, and Brussels Griffons, are known for their lovable, flat-faced appearance. Unfortunately, this distinctive head structure features a shortened muzzle, which can compromise normal respiratory function. Many brachycephalic pets experience difficulty breathing, noisy inhalation, overheating, or exercise intolerance. Because of these anatomic features, most brachycephalic patients are affected by Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) refers to a group of upper airway abnormalities that restrict airflow and make breathing more difficult. Common abnormalities include an elongated soft palate, stenotic (narrowed) nares, and, in some cases, a hypoplastic (underdeveloped) trachea. Over time, these conditions can worsen and significantly impact a pet’s comfort, energy level, and overall quality of life.

When these anatomic abnormalities interfere with a pet’s ability to breathe normally, surgery is the treatment of choice. At Paws for a Cause Vet Care, we offer corrective surgery for BOAS that can be performed on patients with elongated soft palates and/or stenotic nares, often in conjunction with their spay or neuter procedure when appropriate. Not every patient requires both procedures; our surgeon will only perform the corrections your pet needs, and pricing is adjusted accordingly.

For brachycephalic cats, they often do not require elongated soft palate corrections but can benefit at times from nares-widening procedures.

An elongated soft palate can be surgically shortened to a more normal length.
Stenotic nares can be surgically corrected by removing a wedge of tissue from the nostrils, improving airflow through the nostrils.
Before and after surgery

To illustrate the effectiveness of these procedures, we are sharing before-and-after photos from a successful BOAS correction, demonstrating the visible improvement in airway structure and the life-changing impact these surgeries can have.
