We are giving you a pictorial overview of a canine ovariohysterectomy (OVH), also known as a spay surgery. This procedure is being performed on a 6-month-old, 30-pound female dog that has never been in heat.
If your dog is older or larger, the uterus is also much larger, and the ovaries have more fat around them, which then requires more surgical time and a longer incision. Also, if a patient is in estrus (heat), the uterus is enlarged and the blood vessels are engorged, requiring more time and extra ligatures; please see my previous blog on why this is NOT a good time to have your pet spayed!
