Understanding How Early Spaying Reduces the Risk of Mammary Tumors

Advanced surgery

Spay surgery is a common topic of discussion when bringing your female pets in for their veterinary examination. It is most known for preventing female pets from having litters and heat cycles. The spay surgery also helps to prevent and decrease the occurrence of mammary tumors in female pets.

Mammary tumors are abnormal growths of the mammary tissue in cats and dogs.  Typically, they develop later in a female pet’s life, but it can occur as early as 4 years old. These tumors can be benign or cancerous. Majority of these tumors require surgery to remove and alleviate your pet from discomfort. After surgery, it is recommended to send the tumor to a lab for review. This can help your vet diagnose the tumor and determine next steps. While mammary tumors can happen later in their life, prevention starts early. Spaying your pet at an early age can counteract the development of mammary tumors and prevent surgery in her future.
