Paws for a Cause Vet Care played a key role in the 2026 Chicagoland Humane Coalition Outdoor Cat Spay and Neuter Tour, a first-of-its-kind, week-long collaborative initiative aimed at reducing outdoor cat populations and supporting healthier communities.

From March 9–15, 2026, the Tour brought together multiple animal welfare organizations across Chicagoland to provide free spay and neuter surgeries. Paws for a Cause Vet Care, one of the participating nonprofits, spayed and neutered 131 during the tour, at no cost to the caretakers and trappers of outdoor cats.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), the method used during the Tour, involves humanely trapping outdoor cats, performing spay or neuter procedures, vaccinating them, and then returning them to their homes. This approach is widely recognized as the most effective way to reduce outdoor cat populations while improving the welfare of cats and the neighborhoods they inhabit.

“In the Chicagoland area, we have hundreds of thousands of cats living outdoors,” said Liz Houtz, Coalition member, Tour organizer, and cofounder of local TNR group Cats in Action. “We know that about 80% of cats entering shelters originate from outside. Where we can make the largest impact is ending the cycle of community cat breeding through initiatives like this one.”

For those working directly in the field, the results are tangible.

“As someone who is out there every week, it’s incredibly heartwarming to see the impact TNR has, curtailing the endless cycle of breeding while improving the lives of community cats and the people who care for them,” said Houtz.

The 2026 Outdoor Cat Spay/Neuter Tour marked the first time that animal welfare organizations across Chicagoland aligned resources at this scale to address community cat overpopulation strategically. Paws for a Cause Vet Care’s efforts were a cornerstone of the Tour, ensuring that dozens of cats received safe, high-quality care.
